Unit 11, was about teaching receptive skills, reading and listening. We saw that the main reasons for reading and listening ,were entertainment and to achieve a special goal. We looked at the specialist skills needed for reading and listening, such as, predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information and deductions from content. Potential problems were mainly with the language in the text, the topics chosen and the tasks for students to perform. We learnt ways to address the language issues, and saw that students can be motivated when interesting topics are chosen and would readily engage in the tasks given. An example of a lesson for teaching receptive skills, was given, using the patchwork form of the ESA system. The grammar section taught on making comparisons, along with exercises.
