Using a conditionals and reported speech is a good way to to test if the learner has a firm grip on the different types of tenses. The five conditionals gets difficult if the structure switches and if the the student mixes the conditionals and the form that goes with it. Mistakes tend to occur when one refers the future along with using past tense. Remembering the form clause at the end of the conditionals makes it easier to narrow down the type of conditional being used. For example, a present tense in zero conditional and a will in first conditional shows one action could occur will the other is certain. On the other hand, form of reported speech leans towards past tenses, so memorizing the table would aid in reporting but there are also exceptions and need to understand the context being reported.
