As a non-native speaker, I understand the challenges of English phonetics well. Many people can read and grasp spoken English but they are reluctant to speak because they are too self- conscious about their non-native accent. I will teach older students the basics of International phonemic alphabet emphasizing sounds that don't exist in French language such as diphthongs, dental fricatives (th),palato -alveolar africates (j, ch) and velar nasal (ng). I will underline the stressed syllable in words and will write the phonetic symbols for those words on the board. The differences between British and American English will also be mentioned. Regardless how strong their accent is, I'll make sure my students gain confidence with a good pronunciation of words so they can make themselves understood anywhere.
