This unit discussed the importance of evaluating the level of English proficiency of students. While the teacher in the classroom can offer a variety of methods of testing and evaluation, including tutorials and student evaluations, there are quite a few external exams offered by a variety of accredited institutions. Probably the most commonly used external exams are offered by the Cambridge Assessment. It was especially helpful for me to understand the difference between placement and diagnostic testing. The summary theme I took away was the importance of testing and evaluation to ensure that students are not frustrated (course material too easy or hard), bored (using only the course book), but instead are engaged by interesting material (either authentic or created) offered at the proper level.
