This unit introduced the idea of receptive and productive skills. Its focus was on receptive skills which are reading and listening. The two main reasons for reading and listening are for a purpose and for entertainment (though usually these are mixed together). The five different skills that a teacher needs to cover are: predictive, scanning, skimming, understanding detailed information and being able to deduct a meaning from a certain context. While teaching reading and listening can be very difficult, teachers can aid tremendously by pre-teaching unknown vocabulary (though not overdoing it), selecting their texts carefully, choosing varied and interesting topics, creating interest by asking good questions and keeping the students engaged and by promoting understanding and not just checking for it.
