This unit on teaching productive skills outlined the balance necessary for instructing for both fluency and accuracy. Sometimes, fluency should be emphasized more and other times it's accuracy, but both are equally important for successful English learning. Certain activities, such as guided communication and creative prompts, serve to encourage English learners in active speaking participation, and certain techniques are specifically used to encourage student interaction with the language in order to take steps towards understanding and using new grammatical forms and concepts organically. Even writing skills can be taught using the ESA framework, as this lesson chapter underscores. Different games and activities can be planned beforehand in order to facilitate interaction and conversation as well.
