This unit is challenging for me because I am not really familiar with the phonemic symbols. Yes, I have seen those before and thought that only linguists and English majors have to memorize it. But then, if one will teach the English language, you should be able to read the symbols to be effective in teaching the correct pronunciation of words. As a non-native speaker, I have just studied pronunciation by way of listening to native speakers, by way of movies and to a favorite radio show of mine (where the DJs have really good American English accents). I then imitate or copy the pronunciation and accent when I teach. The challenge for me now is teaching my Japanese students the difference between the letters /l/ and /r/. It turns out that they don?t notice any difference when they hear or use it.
