Pronunciation and phonology are integral parts of learning English that should not be avoided. Intonation is an important aspect of understanding not only the words, but the meaning of a sentence. Which word is stressed in a given sentence can also change the intended meaning of what is being said. Which syllable is stressed within a given word is probably the easiest aspect to teach as it is fairly consistent. Understanding native pronunciation will greatly help in navigating the differences between written and spoken English. To effectively teach articulation, it is helpful for teachers to have an understanding of the phonemic alphabet as well as the speech organs and the place of articulation for each sound. One way to help clarify how to articulate each sound is through the use of visual aids.
