The unit dealt with reading and listening - the receptive skills. The two main motives for reading and listening are to achieve a purpose and to be entertained. The unit also identified specialist skills that are employed by readers and listeners. I learnt that students often face challenges when learning to read and listen largely because of the language of the text, the topic and/or the task. However, a teacher can help to minimise these difficulties by pre-teaching vocabulary that is essential to students' understanding o the text; exposing students to a variety of carefully selected non-authentic and authentic material; finding out students' interests and choosing topics that appeal to all students over time; and assigning comprehension tasks that allow students to demonstrate their understanding.
