Teach English in Meihua Jiedaoban - Zhuhai Shi
Unit 13 delves into the fascinating topic of pronunciation. In this unit, we are given a brief tour of the world of phonology, where terms such as fricatives, phonemes, affricates, and plosives abound. This jargon was intimidating at first, but after completing the unit, I came to realize that it's more helpful than confusing. The three main topics covered in this unit are 1) stress and rhythm, 2) intonation, and 3) the international phonetic alphabet. Stress is the emphasis placed on individual words within a sentence, which helps the listener to know what you mean, and rhythm is the way words are linked together. Intonation is the variation in pitch and volume across a sentence, which also helps the listener to know your intent. The international phonetic alphabet was by far the most interesting topic, where I learned the surprising fact that English is not phonetic. The phonemic alphabet chart provided proved this point very well, and it was challenging and fun to learn how to read words written in English using these symbols. It was almost like writing in code. In this unit, I learned the numerous ways in which everyday sounds are formed, what differentiates them, and how the slight movement of the tongue can change one letter into another. In the end, the unit emphasizes that it is context that helps a listener to tell the difference between \"I scream\" and \"ice cream\
