This unit offered some interesting views on the use of textbooks and course work within the classroom, versus the use of authentic and teacher created materials. As I teach in Japan, where Text books are king, yet are outdated, boring and have terrible examples, I think it was useful to see some thoughts, advantages and disadvantages of all forms of lesson and curriculum planning. In my situation, my lessons are prepared without a textbook. Students have two English subjects which have separate text books, one focused on grammar, and the other focused on \"English communication\". Unfortunately, these grammar books often seem to be incredibly dry and teach outdated language, while the communication books often have vocabulary and grammar which is outside of my students level of comprehension. As such, I have focused my lessons on fundamental, communicative skills. This has caused a lot of additional work on my behalf, but the freedom has allowed me to make some good targeted lessons, however the level can often be a bit low, I find it is good for developing skills neglected by the other english units. I do often feel however, that incorporating the text books, or at least the grammar or topics used within them, into my classes, could create a bit more structure, especially when stuck for ideas for new lessons. This unit was useful in providing some ideas on how to do this.
