Teach English in Gongbei Jiedaoban - Zhuhai Shi
Teachers find themselves in a unique situation day in and day out. Facing students from all walks of life who come from various backgrounds and situations, teachers need to be flexible, accommodating, and open minded. One characteristic that stood out to me was that teachers need to have a good rapport and interaction with the class. The reason why I think this is important is when kids feel as though the teacher understands them as a person and their situation, then learning becomes more feasible for them. I remember when I was teaching in China on a short teaching assignment, I remember using picture cards to teach the kids different words in English. But my approach was I told the students that I wanted them to tell me what was in the picture in their native language because I wanted to learn their native language. In return, I would tell them what was in the picture in English. This way the students and I shared a commonality that we both were trying to learn a language. Another point I learned from this unit was the difference between adult learners and young learners. As an elementary and intermediate school teacher I have taught from grades 4-8 but haven?t taught adult learners, so I learned that adults have more awareness of language and how it relates to english. I also learned that adults would have more learning experiences at the current state in their life.
