Students are given various tests throughout their courses. At the start of the course students typically take a placement test in order to group students at the same level, or a diagnostic test to discover what the what the students know and don't know, again at the start of a course. Progress tests are taken periodically on test the students knowledge of what has already been taught. Other tests are external tests which are taken outside of the course such as the Cambridge assessment and proficiency tests which are not course related but measure proficiency in English at certain levels. Placement tests - are designed to enable students to be able to place new students into the correct class depending on their language ability. Progress tests - should be used periodically to identify what the students have remember and what language has been forgotten. These should include reading, listening, speaking and writing as well as grammar and vocabulary. Diagnostic tests - are similar to placement tests but more extensive. Practice tests - follow the format and structure of external exams External exams - such as the US's TOEFL, the IELTS and the TOEIC. Also very common are Cambridge's Key English Test, Preliminary English Test, First Certificate in English, Certificate in Advanced English and Certificate of Proficiency in English as well as the English Skills for Life tests.
