Teach English in Minzhong Zhen - Zhongshan Shi
As I was studying Unit 3, I did a lot reflection on how I really learned (or should I say, \"re-learned\") the English language in first and second grade after I had just returned to the US at age 6 after living 2 years in another country. What immediately came to mind (and as the author pointed out in the beginning of the unit was the \"ideal\" environment for learning a language) was that I learned a lot just by talking a lot with my classmates, who were all native speakers. For instance, I distinctly remember pointing to parts of my body and asking my classmate \"what's this?\" over and over again. The boy who I queried about parts of the anatomy also ended up being my best friend in elementary school. That being said, obviously the crux of this unit concerned methodologies for tackling the challenge of teaching ESL to students in a non-immersive environment. However, I firmly believe that a student's classmates are an invaluable resource in helping student learn a language, even if none of them are native speakers. Of course, this assumes that the student's aren't complete beginners all fending for themselves. Indeed, there is no hard-and-fast rule for teaching students. No two students or two classes are ever alike. As a teacher, you're always trying to gauge the level and progress of the student with the lesson material and adapting your teaching method accordingly.
