This unit introduced some excellent planning strategies for classroom work, and even ones that could easily transfer to individual lessons. Being able to \"stack\" or escalate what you as a teacher are asking of the students is crucial, and if I remember when I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant, I think my instruction would have benefited from more planning. I had no concept of Engage-Study-Activate, or even Presentation-Practice-Production, which I used when I was a phone/Internet trainer. We had a department plan to follow, but the execution was left to us. I like the idea of planning out the Interaction piece as well. I have never actually planned that out, and I think that's been a mistake. I also think that comparing anticipated problems (with solutions) to what actually happens and monitoring how those impact learner objectives and teacher aims would be extremely important. Above and beyond the historical document the lesson plan represents, essentially journaling everyone's experience can only benefit both teacher and learner. Most critically, I think it would ease the impact of \"surprises\" in instruction. With enough planning and documentation, surprises should be minimized in their ability to throw the teacher off his/her guard. You can't prevent surprises, and most surprises are positive and make the instruction memorable, but keeping everybody on task is key.
