Teach English in Zhagang Zhen - Zhaoqing Shi
This unit was a basic overview of the three type of lessons that you would give in a class. These three are vocabulary lessons, grammar lessons, and language function lessons. As the name suggests, vocabulary is for teaching new words, grammar is for teaching structures, and function is for teaching communicative tasks such as inviting, complimenting, agreeing and so on. While showcasing these three types, the unit reviews the ESA models and show how it compliments the three lessons. For example, straight arrow lessons are good for teaching vocabulary, patchwork lessons are good for grammar, and lastly boomerang lessons are good for language functions. Overall I think this was a good review of ESA models. In addition, while I have taught for about a year and a half, I have never thought about dividing everything I've taught into the three main categories: vocabulary, grammar, and language. Oftentimes, teaching high school using a textbook, one lesson encompasses both vocabulary and grammar. Then for language function practice, I normally insert an extra activity at the end of the class or a warm up in the beginning of class. Seeing the sample ESA lesson plans for these three categories of lessons gave me lots of different class structuring ideas. Perhaps I should start lesson planning based on vocabulary, grammar, and language function as opposed to cramming all three into one lesson.
