This unit covers coursebooks and lesson materials. Teachers will often supplement a course book with materials that can be divided into two groups: authentic and created. Authentic materials are anything a native speaker would hear or read. They can be more interesting to students, though are not graded for level. Created materials are designed by the teacher and can include crosswords, flash cards, picture stories, etc. Coursebooks generally consist of student's books, work books, cassettes, teacher's books, video, etc. They provide a syllabus graded to a level suitable to students, provides security, a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary and skill work, continuity and progression, tested materials, as well as offering good ideas to teachers. Disadvantages include: not meeting needs of class members, being predictable and boring, making teachers lazy, being made for a general audience, as well as preventing lessons from being adaptable. They are best used when carefully selected, approached critically and supplemented with other materials and activities. When using a course book teachers can omit lessons, replace material, supplement additional material and adapt the coursebook to their own style. Furthermore, when choosing a book a teacher must take into account: it's price, design, methodology, skills, difficulty, syllabus, topic, the teacher's guide and the ancillary materials provided.
