Teach English in PaishA Zhen - Zhaoqing Shi
Unit 20 is the final unit in this course and it covers troubleshooting for common problem situations. There are six problem situations a teacher will likely face at some point in their career: 1) a new beginner group of students who do not know one another and are totally unfamiliar with EFL, 2) Students who may or may not know one another but are varied in their English skills, 3) Large classes with 30-100 students, 4) classroom appears to overly rely on their native language, 5) students who seem reluctant to participate, and 6) classroom seems to really struggle with listening comprehension. I found the advice and suggestions in this unit to be helpful and will be sure to refer back to this unit when I am faced with one of these problems. In particular, the advice I benefited from most was how to get shy students to participate, and the use of choral repetition for large classrooms. I also really liked the idea of choosing students to be group leaders and pass out/collect materials and ensure their group is being quiet/participating. In addition, I liked the tip about using a brief warmer to get the class comfortable with one another. Overall I liked how this unit took a problem and looked at the underlying cause of it. For example, with students who use their native language too much, this may be due to differences in English ability, or the assignment being to difficult for the students.
