This unit focused on the productive skills, writing and speaking. It covered the reasons we write and speak, and the differences in structure and grammar, with written speech using different grammar and structures. The key concepts I learned in the unit were the differences between Accuracy and fluency, with accuracyt being focused on the production of correct language, whereas fluency activities focus on the students being able to produce language with minimal thinking time. It also reinforced the different types of activities, from controlled activities where the teacher gives the correct model, to guided where the students produce pre-determined language, through to creative activities, where the teacher has minimal involvement. I think the last two units have been useful for me in reflecting on my current lessons, and those of my colleagues. My lessons have generally covered guided or free speaking activities, with a communication focus, but has often neglected production of significant pieces of writing, or reading of texts. The lessons have often focused on the Engage and Activate stages, while neglecting any substantive study phase. In stark contrast, My colleagues lessons however, are often conducted in the student's native language, with a focus on translation of text. They often neglect free-writing and communication. Most of the lesson would be considered to be the Study phase.
