Unit seven was about teaching vocabulary, grammar, and function. When learning a new language students need to be exposed to the language, understand its meaning and how it is constructed, and be able to practice and produce the language. Vocabulary is more important at earlier stages of learning a language. Students have receptive vocab and productive. Their receptive is often larger. Receptive refers to words they know but don?t use, and productive refers to words they know and use. How easy or difficult the vocabulary will be depends on the similarity to the native language, similarity to the words they already know, spelling/pronunciation, and appropriacy. Selecting vocabulary is the biggest problem when teaching vocabulary. To learn vocabulary students need the meaning, use, grammar, interactions, spelling, and pronunciation. The unit gives teaching ideas and a sample lesson for teaching vocabulary. With grammar students need to know the meaning, use, forms/patterns, and the spoken and written forms. The unit again gives teaching ideas for grammar. Finally, function refers to whether or not the language is inviting, refusing, agreeing/disagreeing, suggesting, etc. Function also includes appropriacy. So is the language formal, informal, tentative, technical, etc. Lessons for function will stress the activation of language, therefore boomerang or patchwork ESA lessons will be the best.
