In this unit, I learned about the different usages and types of nouns, adjectives, gerunds, articles, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, verbs, and adverbs. While I consider English language grammar to be a strong point of mine, reading this chapter and reviewing the more subtle grammar points such as the distinction between countable and uncountable nouns reminded me that my future students could be easily confused by these concepts and will need me to be cognizant of and verbalize the little grammatical distinctions that I generally give no thought to when speaking and writing. For example, if one or more of my students speak French as their native language, they may create sentences such as \"I am going to wash the hairs,\" because in French \"hairs\" is preceded by a definite article and treated as a countable noun. Similarly, any students who speak Spanish as their native language may create a sentence such as \"The foot hurts\" instead of \"My foot hurts\" because in Spanish a definite articles precedes body parts as opposed to a possessive pronoun. Therefore, I will need to be clear about categorizing the parts of speech when teaching grammar and provide examples for my students so that they can form a firm grasp of how to create grammatically correct sentences. Comparing and contrasting English language grammar with the grammar of my students' native languages may also prove helpful.
