Teach English in Maning Zhen - Zhaoqing Shi
Unit 4 covers the use of Authentic and Non-Authentic materials, as well as lesson planning and how to use the internet to find online resources to use in your lesson plan. Authentic materials are materials that have been created for other uses besides being used in the classroom, while Non-authentic materials are created solely for the use in being a teaching aid in a classroom. Some examples of an Authentic material can be a brochure for a travel company, a t.v. commercial/program, or a concert poster. Examples of Non-authentic materials can include textbooks, worksheets, anything designed by the teacher, etc. However, I've learned that when using Authentic materials, the teacher must be aware of the content and the relevance to their teaching point if they are planning on using it with their students. Some Authentic material may not be appropriate because it may not be at the right grammar level of their students/class, might not be interesting, or may contain cultural or social references that are sensitive. I've also learned that due to the increasing interest in Business English in the recent years there is more book resources available to teachers, and that there are mainly two types: The first is that Language is the primary focus (tenses, vocabulary, grammar, etc.) while the second has its focus on business situations, with the lessons looking at the typical language one would encounter.
