Teach English in Luogang Zhen - Zhaoqing Shi
This unit focused on the various methods and theories of teaching a language. Some of these are still widely used and others more obsolete. Some of these ranged from translation methods, listening to audio playback, to focusing on words and phrases instead of only grammar and vocabulary. The main teaching method focused on in this unit was that of ESA (Engage, Study and Activate). There were many examples given of various activities for each ESA stage, as well as how to execute each stage so that the student benefits the most from the lesson. I also learned the importance of correct students regarding their errors and mistakes, especially how not to correct the students. An example of this would be that if a student makes a mistake, the teacher should engage the student in such a way that the student is able to identify their own mistake and correct it themselves. If the student isn't able to correct themselves then the teacher could ask for fellow students to help in the correction if the student is comfortable with this. Only if these methods of correction doesn't work would the teacher correct the student. The teacher also shouldn't spend too much time on this student for their mistake as it could embarrass them and so after a short amount of time it is best to move on. The teacher doesn't want to over correct and should wait till activities are done in the activate stage to make corrections.
