Teach English in LianhuA Zhen - Zhaoqing Shi
The four basic language skills are divided into two subgroups: receptive skills (reading and listening) and productive skills (speaking and writing). They are all equally important. We can read or listen for education or entertainment, or a combination of the two. How we understand what we read depends on our previous knowledge or cultural context. We read and listen using predictive skills (assuming what is in a body of text from the title or headline) scanning for specific information (looking through a body of text for specific information) skimming for the general idea (looking at the first and last paragraph and looking over the text for keywords to gain the general idea) detailed information (where we read the entire text to understand it thoroughly) and deducting from context (meaning derived from the situation). Students may have trouble understanding text or spoken language. They may have trouble understanding text naturally without understanding every word, or reading idiosyncratic texts written for native speakers. Teachers can address these problems by playing to the vocabulary the students already understand to help them understand words in contexts, and carefully select texts or manufacture examples specifically for non-native speakers.
