Teach English in Liangcun Zhen - Zhaoqing Shi
Unit 14 was about preparation of course books and lesson materials. Teachers may choose to use authentic materials as well as create materials themselves. Authentic materials might include: newspapers, magazines, songs, brochures, menus, films, videos, etc... Using authentic materials can be good in the aspect that they interest and motivate the students, while giving them more confidence. However, materials must be relevant and selected carefully based on the level of the students. Activities can be adjusted by setting level specific goals. Created materials could include: crossword puzzles, word searches, role play cards, flashcards, gap fill activities, and picture stories. One advantage is that they can be created and graded based on the level of the students. When using course books, teachers may omit or replace information. They may also supplement the books with additional materials or adapt as needed. Teachers should consider several factors when selecting their own course books and materials such as: price, availability, design, methodology, skills, difficulty, syllabus, topics, the teacher's guide, and additional materials (CDs, videos, workbooks, etc.). Overall, unit 14 was good for learning about types of course materials, what to look for as a teacher, the advantages and disadvantages of course books/materials, as well as for providing some examples of supplementary/created materials.
