Unit 19 is about teaching English to special groups. The group in the unit were beginners, individual students, children, business English, monolingual, and multilingual. Beginners come in different types. The absolute beginner has had no English at all. The False beginner may have studied or been exposed to English, but is still very much a beginner. The adult beginner is usually motivated because it is their choice to learn English. The young beginner might be less motivated because they are more likely forced to learn English. Finally the beginner without use of the Roman alphabet. This beginner will need a lot of initial work and a lot of practice with reading and writing. Teaching individual students will give more attention to the students specific needs, but could be more tiresome for the teacher. Teaching children can be the most rewarding. Teaching needs to be slower, with a more clearly pronounced delivery, with a lot of repetition. Business English is often taught at large companies. You do not need to be an expert in the client's field, you just need to know the vocabulary and English needs of the client. Finally monolingual and multilingual groups. Monolingual is when everyone in your groups knows or has the same L1. Multilingual is when the students come from different countries and cultures. Knowing your client and their needs will definitely help in lesson planning.
