This unit covers the variety of present tense forms used in the English language, and suggests that this is one of the more challenging aspects of grammar and language for both the teacher and the student. The first tense is the present simple tense, where there is just a subject and a verb. The first person present tense is probably the simplest form of sentence, followed by the third-person singular, which needs to change the verb to add suffixes at the end. Present simple tense is used for things like routines, habits, commentaries, permanent situations and facts, directions and instructions, newspaper headlines, historical sequences, and present stories. The second tense covered in the unit is the present continuous tense, which adds a present participle to the verb being used in a present tense situation, such as \"I am learning\". This allows for three types of sentences: affirmative (positive), negative, and questions. The third tense covered is the present perfect tense, which connects something that happened in the past with something that is still going on in the present. The final major area covered is the present perfect continuous tense, which essentially combines the rules of the previous two tense forms to relate past activities to present, with the implication that they activity will continue in the future and/or that the activity was going on for some length of time in the past.
