Teach English in Jingkou Zhen - Zhaoqing Shi
This unit covers various teaching methodologies and introduces the Engage, Study, & Activate approach on which this course is built. It includes suggested activities for each of the three stages of an ESA lesson and identifies the aims and outcomes of each stage. The main purpose of the engage stage is to spark student interest and encourage high talk time and participation from everyone. The main purpose of the study stage is to delve into the language content/construction and provide exercises, drills, feedback, etc. to help students understand the language point correctly and completely. Finally, the main purpose of the activate stage is to give students the opportunity to put into practice and context their new language skills (in conjunction with all/any other English they already have). This unit also covers best practices for correcting student errors and mistakes to ensure student confidence and comfort while still preventing misunderstanding and promoting learning. I really like the ESA approach/structure, and I feel like it will be useful to me in designing proper lesson plans. I found the example activities interesting and thought-provoking to review but hard to situate in a classroom context without knowing the culture, age, experience level, and interests of the actual students. I think these activities will be especially helpful for me to review once I know who my students are.
