Teach English in Huanggang Zhen - Zhaoqing Shi
In this unit I learned about the different tests used for evaluating students' English levels. I found the information about the TOEFL, IELTS, and TOEIC tests the most useful. As an English teacher in Japan, these are the tests that my students are most likely to take. I knew that my students sometimes take these tests, but I never knew the exact structure and content of the tests, so knowing them will allow me to focus my ability to help students focus their studies and progress toward their goals. Since most Japanese people take TOEIC to measure their English skills for work, I was very shocked to read that it's not considered to be a good gauge for competence; however, I can understand this viewpoint because many classes in Japan focus on reading skills for the tests, so often even university students can't communicate well in English even if they know all of the grammar rules and vocabulary. This information will further motivate me to encourage my students to speak often so that they can have true communication skills in the future. As for the information about the Cambridge tests, it's interesting to know, but almost completely irrelevant to my work since I intend to continue teaching within Japan. Most students here take English tests for work or university without ever intending to live in a foreign country, so it's unlikely I'll ever have students that need to take European English tests.
