What I liked about this unit was thinking about how to create a balanced lesson that focuses on receptive skills. I liked thinking about how to judge for understanding because that can be tricky to find out if students really understood what they just took in. I liked thinking about how I would use these teaching ideas in my future lessons as I plan to be a tutor. I think there is a huge advantage there of working with students one-on-one so I can really tailor my text and audio selections to their interests and knowledge level. I thought about how I will create something to assess receptive skills at the first lesson with students to see where their problem areas are. I will obviously do the same with productive skills as well but I think that it's easy to forget that having good productive skills does not mean that one has good receptive skills. I also think that teaching students how to skim, scan, or deduce meaning from text is a useful skill that often doesn't get taught because the norm is to teach word for word learning. I am already brainstorming ideas for how I can incorporate activities that will encourage students to use these skills when working with English texts. On a day-to-day basis, most people read to skim, scan, or deduce many more times than they read things in a detailed way. And doing so requires some different understanding of English than detailed reading that is also valuable.
