Teach English in HengshAn Zhen - Zhaoqing Shi
This unit discussed cultural issues when teaching around the world, employment, and professional development. General rules to keep in mind are as follows: research as much as possible about the area you?re going to before you go, be conservative in speech and manner, use formal greetings, never express political or social opinions unless you know they won?t be misrepresented, and don?t be sarcastic with students. Some ways to find employment opportunities are via advertising, posting your resume on the internet, or networking in country. It?s good to ask certain questions to a potential employer or interviewer to get an idea of the job, such as: length of contract, extra-curricular responsibilities, work hours, support systems, location, overtime, demographics of students, sick days, salary, etc. In a CV/resume, the basics that should be included are: full name, phone number, email address, current address, nationality, teaching experience, and qualifications. There were a number of resources listed in this unit that I was unaware of. I learned a lot from checking out the websites and seeing what each had to offer in terms of resources and employment opportunities. I also learned a lot of good questions to ask to a potential employer before deciding on where to work. Knowing to ask these questions will decrease any uneasiness or concerns I might have before choosing an employer.
