Teach English in Guicheng Jiedao - Zhaoqing Shi
This unit covers Classroom Management through physical interactions (eye contact, voice tone and volume, gestures to enhance the lesson) and using students' names effectively. I found myself disagreeing to an extent with the rule of using a student's name at the end of a question solely to keep the entire class on their toes. I recall my own time as a shy student and being so nervous of being called upon, that I couldn't focus on the words being said. It was only when the pressure of having to answer in front of the whole class was lifted that I was able to actively listen in and focus. Though I do feel as though I am the outlier in this instance. This unit also covers classroom arrangement (rows, horseshoe, grouped tables) and teacher placement and how it affects the atmosphere of the classroom and potentially the effectiveness of the lesson. It also covers groupwork dynamics, teacher/student interaction, talk time, instruction giving and maintaining discipline. I learned the most from this final sub-section, as maintaining discipline in a classroom setting is something that I'm sometimes concerned about. My best friend and roommate taught high school chemistry and had many unruly classes and plenty of stories to tell. Fortunately for her, she was a pro at handling them and maintaining control and the students' respect, which is something that I also hope to achieve someday with as much ease and grace.
