This unit examined the four present tenses. The present simple is used in a variety of occasions, including permanent situations and facts, routine actions, and directions. Oftentimes students will forget to add ?s? to verbs used with ?he/she/it,? for example ?She drink water.? The present continuous has several uses including when discussing an action that is in progress, or to emphasize frequent actions. Students sometimes forget to include ?am/are/is? when using the present continuous, for example ?She reading a book.? The present perfect can be used to describe a general experience, or to talk about a past experience or event that is still true at the present moment. Students often have trouble with the past participle of verbs, since many verbs are irregular and do not follow a set pattern. Lastly, the present perfect continuous is used to describe a recent event that has a consequence in the present time, or to discuss an ongoing event or activity. Students occasionally misuse verbs that do not take on the continuous form. This lesson was useful as it covered the specifics of each of the present tenses, and also included numerous examples of what students are likely to become confused about. Understanding common student errors is beneficial, as this knowledge can be used when designing a lesson plan in order to address these issues in advance.
