As a learner of a foreign language myself, and a teacher to some ESL learners, I found this unit interesting. It reminded me of the importance of not using a student's mother tongue. I have a child in my current class who is a native German speaker. It is very tempting for the both of us to use his first language when engaging in conversation. His peers (who are also learning his first language) tend to also want to converse this way. When comparing his progress with another ESL student, whose first language is unfamiliar to both the teacher and the students, I can see immediately the difference. Her progress in English is much faster. In my own personal experience, I have found that those who can speak English will prefer doing so with me, rather than in German. I usually find that frustrating as I know I am missing a perfect opportunity to develop my own language skills. I enjoyed learning about teaching 'Business English'. Having spent most of my life in educational settings, I have always felt inadequate when talking about business. When I first approached TEFL, I was given the option of obtaining a free course, either for teaching English to young learners or teaching Business English. Initially I thought that I should opt for the young learners course, especially as this is one of my great passions. However, I now understand that the latter course is new to me and therefore would be more beneficial.
