Teach English in Dayukou Zhen - Zhaoqing Shi
This unit covers the basic requirements for being a teacher and what to expect from a teacher or a learner. The first part of unit 1 covers what makes a good teacher and which different roles a teacher can employ and in which situations the roles should be used. The latter part of unit 1 deals with what makes a good learner and how learners can differ in terms of age, motivation, learning experience and culture among other things. Unit one also offers a breakdown of different language levels which is important to know when teaching certain groups of students, for example beginners. I feel that I have gotten a better understanding on how to become a good teacher and which qualities are required to do so. In addition to that I have also learnt how to act in the classroom by employing different roles and the importance of changing between different roles. Initially I thought of roles as more rigid and that a teacher did not have to be as flexible when changing roles. However, the information provided in unit 1 has changed my view to see switching between roles as more fluid and a crucial part of teaching. Furthermore, I have also learnt that there are more differences between learners and aspects to consider when dealing with different learners than I would have thought. Thus, I feel like I am more prepared to deal with different types of learners and what to be aware of when teaching a certain group of learners.
