Unit 18 talks about modal auxiliary verbs, the passive voice, relative clauses, and phrasal verbs. I feel ashamed to state, that even though I am from the United States, and English is the language I have grown up speaking, all of the information that I read over was challenging. If I am to teach students who speak Spanish as their dominant tongue, I would not teach all of this information at once because this could confuse or stress them, and many would not want to continue studying English. The simple fact is that modal auxiliary verbs appear similar but they have different meanings, and phrasal verbs can be examples of common every-day informal sayings that English speakers use. Native speakers of Spanish could have trouble with these topics because many might want to use translating devices and those devices do not always translate correctly, and as one of the previous units stated before, the learners will never speak English like a native, and as a result they could wonder what the teacher is saying when phrasal verbs are stated. However, the job of the teacher is to allow the students to understand the language and be able to speak or express themselves with it. It is important to teach modal auxiliary verbs and the passive voice little by little, and for the phrasal verbs, as was stated in this unit, include them during practice or conversation, and hopefully, the students can become familiar with them.
