Teach English in Chengbei Jiedao - Zhaoqing Shi
Unit 5 was on managing a class/classroom and some of the ways to effectively create a peaceful, enjoyable, and positive learning experience. Eye contact, gestures and voice are all essential to the classroom, with eye contact being the most essential. Gestures reduce teacher talk time (TTT) and adds visual interest to the students. In addition to the teacher (him/herself), classroom arrangement is another area of a successful learning experience for the student whether it be a standard class room of organized rows where the teacher generally stands, horseshoe shape where the teacher may sit to teach, or separate tables in which the teach can move around from one to the other. A lot of the seating arrangement will depend on whether the students are working individually (not always good as it limits student to student talk time STT), in pairs, groups or as the classroom as a whole. Establishing rapport between the teacher and the student also determines if the learning experience will be a productive and enjoyable one. Good rapport increases class sprit !! And finally the area of maintaining display and potential student problematic behavior. Understanding the different reasons a student may show problamatic behavior and things a teacher may do on their own (i.e.: be punctual, fair, never lose temper, make classwork interesting to name a few) can help to prevent some of the problem behavior before it arises.
