In this unit, I learnt about the different way of testing students to see their level and how to improve it. Usually at the beginning of the year, a teacher should do a placement test which helps categorize the students into levels that aren't too easy or difficult and will help them improve their English. There is the progress test which should be used periodically to see what the students remember. A progress test should include all the four skills, students also get a chance to study and refresh everything that they may have forgotten. There is a diagnostic test which is similar to the placement test but is given at the beginning of the course to see what the students already know. Next there is the practice test which should follow the format and structure of the external examination that they will take at some point throughout the year. There are many different general external examinations including TOEFL, IELTS, and TOEIC. Each of these examinations in universities, colleges on helping non-native speakers improve their English either for moving to a new country or every work life. There is also the Cambrdge exams which include 5 levels. KET, PET, FCE, CAE, and CPE. Starting from elementary exams to advanced levels. The last two levels are very difficult and require more work than an ESL may be able to provide. All these are different ways of testing to help identify your level of English and help you improve.
