Class management is about subtly creating an environment for maximum learning for the particular class and students within. It involves balancing TTT with STT so students can learn new information and understand clearly from the teacher, while discussing, problem solving, practicing, and experimenting with each other and by themselves; both help to learn. A classroom environment, I believe, should bring about a sense of community and teamwork and motivation to master the skill, rather than shaming and intimidating them to do better, because the former will inspire them further and grow their self-esteem. To do this, maximal student talk time is fantastic because it gets them involved in actually doing it rather than just hearing about it in theory. They then own it. A teacher's posture, their choice of words, their temper, their rules in class management, their discipline, their ability to stick with the school's code, their enthusiasm, their kindness, the time they spend one-on-one, and class teamwork by varied group activities, all build towards a positive classroom environment. A good teacher is not one who is enthusiastic or entertaining the students, but is somebody taking the time to ensure their class is growing their new skills wherever they are each up to, with clear instructions and clear authority boundaries. A good teacher builds an environment where everybody wants to learn and feels that they can learn.
