Both grammar and vocabulary are important parts of a language. Each one individually cannot fully represent \"beautiful\" use of a language. Receptive vocabulary represents the words a person knows but doesn't use, while productive vocabulary represents the words a person knows and uses. Difficulty of a vocabulary item depends on similarity to the learner's own language, similarity to the English that the learner already knows, the spelling of the item, the pronunciation of the item, and how appropriate the item is. When selecting vocabulary for a lesson, the teacher should take into consideration multiple factors. These include how appropriate a word is to the students and to the task, how often a student is going to use or come across the word, and how teachable a word is. When learning a new vocabulary item, students will need to know what it means, when to use it, where it belongs, how it interacts with other words, how it is written, and how it is spoken. When learning grammar items, a student needs to know what the language means, how and when it is used, the patterns of the language item, and and differences in written and spoken forms. Language functions are also an important part of learning a language, in addition to grammar and vocabulary. This includes things like inviting and refusing or agreeing and disagreeing. These functions can also have different appropriateness, like tentative, informal, or formal.
