This unit focused on the different types of materials that can be used in the classroom. Comparing the pros and cons of using authentic (material that was produced for real purpose and not for a classroom) and non-authentic materials (materials that were produced specifically for use in a classroom). We also went over the importance of lesson planning, lesson plans can be used as more than just a guide during class, it can also be used as a Historical document to know what has been covered and when, but it can also be used in the case that someone has to take over during our class. We reviewed the advantages and disadvantages of Course books, and the best ways to use them. We must use our best judgement when omitting information, when to replace appropriate material, when to supplement material to reinforce a language point and when to adapt a certain point in a different manner. We also took a brief look at some tools that we can use to maintain an order with our students, from hand gestures, to changing the tone of our voice, calling students by name, making eye contact, changing the order of the groups in the classroom, maintaining visual contact at all times with all students, as well as being sure to give clear and thorough instructions to our students when starting new activities. What I feel I have learned from this lesson, is that having an assertive attitude and communicating in a gentle way, can be effective.
