Teach English in Zhenwen Zhen - Zhanjiang Shi
Successfully managing a classroom involves several factors including class size, the teacher's organizational abilities, and the teacher's ability to maintain discipline within the classroom. One of the main goals of teaching is to promote student talk time and to limit teacher talk time. Students need to develop confidence in their language skills and the best way for this to occur is to get the students talking. Arranging the classroom in a more intimate way, such as in a horseshoe shape, allows for a more relaxed atmosphere and makes it easier for the teacher to place students in pairs. Pair work is an excellent way to promote student talk time, and mixing up the pair arrangements keeps things from getting too routine and avoids problems with those pairs who may not particularly get along. When giving instruction the teacher should be careful to maintain eye contact with the entire classroom, but not stare anyone down so as to make them uncomfortable. Eye contact keeps the students engaged and also serves as a way for identifying which student the teacher wishes to answer a question. Culturally accepted gestures can also be useful. Most importantly, in giving classroom instruction the teacher must be clear, use simple language, and be consistent. Whether outspoken or low-key, I believe that with a positive attitude, a willingness to be flexible and the right tools and training I too can be an excellent TESL teacher.
