This unit is about managing a classroom. There are many factors that affect the managing of a classroom. Classroom arrangement, methods of discipline, a teacher's eye contact, gesturing, how he or she uses his/her voice, and even the helpful fact that a teacher knows all the students' names, among other things, all contribute to the successful managing of the classroom. One of these factors is to make sure the physical arrangement of the room is conducive to learning and appropriate for the particular class. For instance, a circle arrangement of the students would not be appropriate for a 30 student class as it is too unmanageable for a large class. Another factor would be how the teacher uses student groupings to add to the learning enrichment of the students. Using pairwork, for example, to increase student talk time, increase opportunities for students to share their ideas and thoughts, and to create a safe environment for even the shy individual to talk is one method of increasing learning time and making the lessons exciting and full of variety. A teacher must be sure he or she is giving individual attention when it is necessry, and creating a good rapport with his or her class members while making sure that student talk time is at a high level so that students can practice the language that they are being taught. These are a few of the things that must be considered by the teacher when managing the classroom.
