We examined the various forms of the past tense in English, namely simple past test, past continuous tense, past perfect tense and past perfect continuous tense. The past tense uses verbs to describe actions that have already happened. A given action can happen at different points in the past, and can last varying durations, (some actions happen and are complete, while others are ongoing), hence the several different kinds of past tenses. The simple past tense describes an action that began and was completed at some specific point in the past. For most verbs, it is formed by adding suffix -ed and -d to the end of the verb. The past continuous is used to describe an action that was ongoing at a given point in the past. For most verbs it is formed by using was or were along with adding the suffix -ing to the end of the verb. The past perfect tense is used to identify a point in the past by which a certain action was already completed. it sequences the past and for most verbs, it is formed by using had along with the simple past tense form of the verb. The perfect continuous tense is the blending of the past continuous and the past perfect tenses. It identifies a point in the past by which a given action has began and is ongoing. It also sequences the past; where the action described is not yet complete by the point of time the sentence refers to. For most verbs, it is formed by using had been along with the suffix -ing.
