Teach English in Xilian Zhen - Zhanjiang Shi
Each class should ideally incorporate all of the four basic language skills. We learned about the two receptive skills in a previous lesson. In lesson 12 we dive into productive skills, speaking and writing. When we write or speak we are communicating. When leading communication based learning we must consider the reasons for communicating and how to capture our students and get them interested and involved. Two large points to consider when creating activities whether a worksheet for the study phase or an interview game for the activate phase we must consider whether the activity is being done for accuracy or fluency. Fluency focuses on the extent and flow of communication while being accurate is how close to correct one is being. Hurdles in communication through speaking can be confidence to speak, knowledge of grammar or vocabulary, and pronunciation. Hurdles for reading however are quite different. Some of the hurdles students face in reading are spelling, sentence grammar, handwriting, and use of punctuation. Since English is not a phonetic language and also has many exceptions to rules spelling is quite a challenge. We can though encourage writing practice through finding student's interests and engaging them through a fun activity like some creative writing. Lastly we must never underestimate the power of games. Learning through games can be so effective when done with purpose and goals and everyone enjoys a good game!
