Teach English in Wushi Zhen - Zhanjiang Shi
I've been excited about this chapter since signing up for this class. I'm naturally a shy person, and I sometimes have a hard time maintaining control. Eye contact is something that I have to remind myself to use, and reading about it has made me realise how important it is to use during class. It is something that I will have to work on. I have taught children English in the past, and I have always struggled on how to deal with children who are disruptive with the class. Knowing now that sometimes all they need is a look from the teacher is helpful. It is also helpful to know that when you start teaching a class, you should err on the side of caution and be stricter. It is easier to become less strict once you and your students have a rapport. I think that the best way to establish rapport is by smiling and being energetic. Something that is different between normal classes, and language classes is that the students should usually spend most of their time speaking. So it is good that this section talks about the advantages and disadvantages of Teacher Talk Time. It is necessary to strike a balance. The teacher needs to speak sometimes but it is really important that the students have a change to practice English where their teacher can correct them. I think the challenge that a language teacher has is to ensure that students are learning, while making sure that they have enough time to practice what they've learned in class.
