Teach English in Shiling Zhen - Zhanjiang Shi
This unit focuses about the receptive skills in teaching and learning English. The receptive skills are listening and reading, because learners do not need to produce language to do these, they receive and understand it. These skills are sometimes known as passive skills. They can be contrasted with the productive or active skills of speaking and writing. I have learnt about the special skills needed when reading or listening, like predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming for the general idea, detailed information and deduction for context. I particularly found helpful the section that focuses on potential language, topics and tasks problems, and how to solve them, by pre-teaching the vocabulary, by selection carefully texts suited to the students` level, by selecting topics that can motivate students, by engaging the students in the tasks and by providing them with comprehension tasks that promote understanding of the material to read or to listen to. I believe that the secret to teaching receptive skills is providing the students with a lot of exposure to the language. But, in order to get fluency in reading and listening the exposure must be enjoyable, level appropriate, and lead to success in receiving and interpreting messages. If the students immerse themselves in listening: listening to music, movies, TV, You Tube, and social media., they can achieve very high levels of listening, and even speaking.
