Teach English in Naozhou Zhen - Zhanjiang Shi
The content of this unit focused on managing classes. Eye contact, gesture, and voice are important tools that teachers must use in the classroom. When it comes to grouping students, there are a few different ways to do it: whole class grouping, students working individually, pair work, and group work. The way students are grouped depends on what the teachers plans to accomplish. There are three popular ways to arrange a classroom: orderly rows, circles and horseshoes, and separate tables. When arranging the classroom, a teacher needs to take into account the size of the room, the nationalities and personalities of the students, etc. When giving instruction it's important to use simple language, be consistent, use visual cues, and check to make sure students understand the directions. In the classroom there are two different types of talking time: teacher talking time and student talking time. Both talking times are important, serve important purposes, and should be balanced. Maintaining discipline may be difficult depending on the class, but it's important to never shout, do not make threats you cannot go though with, and don't be too proud to ask the more experienced teachers for advice. Finally, establishing rapport and class spirit is vital in the classroom. I found this unit extremely interesting because all the experienced teachers whom I have had the opportunity to watch teach are very capable of everything this unit touched upon.
