There four times that can indicate past: ?Past simple (+Subject and verb ed or irregular verb; - subject and auxiliary verb did not; ?Did + subject + verb(base form) ). We use past simple for actions: For finished actions with given time (I watched TV yesterday), When we ask about the time (When did he come?) When we talk about finished action without definite time (He wrote this book.) Teacher should bear in mind that the most common mistake students do - irregular verbs. So should use different kinds of card games, stories or even songs. ?Past continuous (+ subjective+ was/were+ verb ing; - subect+ was not/ were not + verb ing; ? was/ were + subject + verb ing) We use past continuous for actions: For interrupted actions in the past (I was cooking, when he arrived.) For continuous actions in the past (At 10 pm, I was sitting on the train.) ?Past perfect (+ subject + had + past participle; - subject + had not + past participle; ? had+ subject + past participle) When we talked about completed action before another action in the past (She had finished dinner before they arrived.) ?Past perfect continuous (+ subject+ had + been + verb ing; - subject+ had not+ been + verb ing; ? Had + subject + been + verb ing) We use past perfect continuous to show that some action started in the past and continued until another point in the past (Smith had been working in the dentist clinic for 10 years when it went out of business.)
