This unit is of particular relevance to my current teaching situation. I'm an online English teacher who teaches students 1-on-1. My students are all adults, all from the same country (homogeneous, monolingual clientele), and 99% of them are taking English classes because their company requires it. However, I've been spared from the challenges/necessity of seeking out and creating lesson plans for my clients since I work as an independent contractor for a publishing company based in their home country. I can only surmise that perhaps I can, for instance, earn a higher (or maybe significantly higher) hourly rate if I went completely independent (i.e. became a freelance English teacher). That being said, my company takes care of all the marketing and promotion of my services to prospective students, screening and placement of students, guaranteeing my pay even if the student fails to show up for class (we have a strict 12 hour advance cancellation policy), and last but not least, provide me we the necessary course material for every class. I just basically have to show up and teach. It couldn't get any simpler than that. That being said, I do often wonder how I would fare if I devoted at least part of my time to my own independent freelance English teaching practice. That is the most logical next step in my career and personal growth, next to working at a language school in a regular 9-to-5 type of gig. I have lots to think about.
